...Are two of my not-so-favourite things in the world. Turn It In is a new website that lets professors very easily check your originality - it scans your essay and compares it to the millions of other essays in their database and gives you an "originality score". My score is usually 0%, which is good (completely original), but it's annoying having just another hoop to run through.
But what I hate MOST of all are the citation formats and how strict they are. I've lost plenty of marks for forgetting to include an indent in my footnotes here, or a semicolon after that periodical title....it's so painstakingly particular and professors love taking marks off for this crap.
Anyways, I'm currently writing a 22 page paper in Chicago MLA format, and I'm slogging through this stuff as we speak. The only thing that's saving me is an example essay I found on the internet, here
It doesn't help that the official Chicago MLA website is so annoying. You can't just view a sample paper, you have to click through multiple subheadings to find the section you want, only to do it all over again when you use a periodical instead of a book, or whatever.
TL;DR - Strict citation formats suck

haha yes....school is sucks
I completely agree with you. I've never heard of Chicago MLA style, we probably just call it MLA here in the suburbs, lol.
I never understood why you have to write papers for school when only very specialized areas have you writing them like this.
There are ways to bypass it, but sometimes the work doing that makes it less worth it than just writing the whole damn thing yourself :P
that blows. gl finishing it.
in school learn to see how look the real life :)
I agree its just one hassle I don't like to add to turning in an assignment
Thanx for the "Turn it in" site.
This will come in handy. :D
I am so glad they didn't have that when I went to school.
Citation needed.
damn, i feel you on this one :(
citations at the end of papers take so long to do
thanks for sharing!
I never thought about it that way
wow, good to know
that's pretty interesting
2 + 2 = this blog is great haha
i saw that video before!
I hate these type of reports/assignments :(
geez, I remember the days of MLA citations
thanks for sharing!
haha
no citation, no problem
I agree
MLA citations suck... do you have any other updates?
need MOAR great content :D
I showed this site to my friend, and she liked it!
I hear you, professors that force these specific nitpicks because they feel like thats their job are really just being a pain.
Haha yup. Had the same program 8 years ago in High school. I used to just bullcrap my references, but then I lost points enough times to make me be legit.
Yikes, so it's not just MLA style, but taking it a level deeper by making it "Chicago" MLA style. I'm not sure what that means exactly, but it sounds even more tedious and time-consuming than normal citation.
@ Come at Me Bro - What's to love about this? You obviously didn't read any of this post and just typed in "Love it!" as your comment.
I like your blog a lot!
great info
what a unique post!
good post
keep up the good work
Ha I'm doing a chemistry degree (3 years in), and haven't had to write any citations yet, just easy references. title, author, publisher, year. done.
supposedly we use RSC style but i have no idea what that means
If your on the internet, you have failed.
Dude, fucking A. I remember having to do that shit.
you speak the truth man
MLA citations -.-
Good post! Looking forward to reading you next one
Great post!
Nice info!
Tell me about it. I swear, the last essay I wrote resulted in what felt like my prof deducting 5% everytime I missed one.
More pictures like that :=)
